The GST Council chaired by the Minister of Finance has approved making GST Network a government body by taking over 100% shares of the body.

• At present 51% of the shares are with private bodies like ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, LIC Housing etc. 24.5% of the shares are with the Central Government and another 24.5% shares are with state governments collectively.
• GST Network is tasked with provision of IT and other infrastructure services for rolling out GST.

Considering the nature of state functions being performed by GSTN, the government has decided to convert it into a fully-state owned company. It was set up in 2013 as a not-for-profit private limited company.
