Nilgiri tahr: Nilgiri Tahr is state animal of Tamil Nadu and endemic species to the Western Ghats in the Nilgiris. It is confined to a narrow belt of higher elevation of Shola forests in the Western Ghats. In the Red Data Book, the Nilgiri Tahr has been given the IUCN status as Endangered or EN. It is also provided protection under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. A recent study has established that Nilgiri Tahr would lose around 60% of its habitat from 2030s due to climate change.
