India’s first multi-modal terminal port was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on river Ganga in Ramnagar in Varanasi and received first container cargo belonging to PepsiCo.

India has a plan of constructing four multi-modal terminal on National Waterways - 1 i.e. River Ganga. The court terminals have been built by help from World Bank under the Jal Marg Vikas project of IWAI or Inland Waterways Authority of India. The other three terminals will be coming up at Sahibganj, Haldia and Gazipur.
