INS Arihant is India’s indigenous nuclear submarine. It is indigenously designed, developed and manufactured. It has successfully completed its first deterrence patrol. It has long-range mission with live nuclear-tipped missiles.

• With INS Arihant, India has joined the elite club of 6 countries - US, Russia, UK, France and China to have fully operational nuclear triad.
• INS Arihant is based on Russian Akula-1 class submarine.
• It was launched in 2009 and its nuclear reactor went critical in 2013 and it was commissioned in 2016.
• The support for developing the vessel was taken from Russia under the Advanced Technology Vessel programme.

INS Arihant has made Indian Navy a blue water navy. The nuclear reactor powering enabled the submarine to remain submerged for months without having to surface. This has made India a blue water navy nation.
