The Union government in August 2017 declared all the villages on the bank of river Ganga in all the states through which River Ganga flows as Open Defecation Free or ODF villages.

• Further, to make these villages Ganga Grams, the government launched the Ganga Gram Project.
• Under the project, the objectives of solid and liquid waste management, water conservation, renovation of ponds and water resources, organic farming and horticulture and plantation of medicinal plants are being undertaken.
