In an ordinance passed by the President, Bamboo no longer qualifies to be a tree. This is done to encourage bamboo plantation by farmer on private lands.

• The ordinance omits bamboo grown in non-forest areas from the definition of trees.
• The omission exempts it from requiring permits for felling or transportation of bamboo grown in non-forest areas.
• This is to be noted that bamboo grown in forested areas continues to be governed by the provisions of Indian Forest Act.
• This amendment shall help in doubling farmer income by 2022. This move shall also improve the green cover of the country.
