NIRBHAY: Nirbhay is India’s sub-sonic cruise missile which has been developed and designed indigenously. It is a long range sub-sonic cruise missile. The top speed of the missile has been pegged at 0.7 Mach at altitude as low as 100m. The missile was in news as DRDO has conducted a successful test of the missile. CATOBAR: CATOBAR stands for Catapult-based aircraft launch mechanism. India is borrowing this advanced technology from US for its second indigenous aircraft carrier. Other aircraft launch system in ships is EMALS which stands for Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch system. CATOBAR is preferred as it is steam powered and will allow Indian navy to operate heavy surveillance aircraft, in addition to heavy fighters. CATOBAR is costlier than EMALS.
