West Bengal’s Gobindobhog rice has been granted geographical indication status.

• The rice is a speciality from Burdwan district of West Bengal.
• The rice is a short grain, white, aromatic, sticky rice with a sweet buttery flavour. The rice derives its name from principal ingredient used in preparation of offerings to Govindajiu, the family detiy of Setts of Kolkata.
• This rice variety has certain advantages: it is cultivated late and therefore not much affected by rains. Its productivity per area is high and therefore, farmers get better prices. Besides, the rice is also resistant to pests.
