International Stammering/Stuttering Awareness Day 2023 is a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about stammering (also known as stuttering) and promoting understanding and support for individuals who stammer. International Stammering/Stuttering Awareness Day is observed annually on October 22nd.
- It’s a day to shed light on the challenges faced by people who stammer and to encourage a more inclusive and empathetic society. International Stammering/Stuttering Awareness Day aims to destigmatize stammering, provide resources for those affected, and promote speech therapy and communication skills development.
- In 2023, this day falls on a Sunday, providing an opportunity for individuals and organizations to engage in educational and supportive activities.
- It’s estimated about 1% of the world’s population stutters, where about 5% of children go through a period of stuttering. Approximately 80% of children who begin to stutter ultimately stop stuttering and children who continue to stutter into the school-age years are likely to continue stuttering throughout their lives. Males stutter more frequently than females. The male-to-female ratio is roughly 4 to 1 in adults but closer to 2 to 1 in children.
International Stuttering Awareness Day 2023 Theme
This year, 2023, the International Stuttering Awareness Day Theme is “One Size Does NOT Fit All.” It emphasises that not everyone with a stammer will experience life the same way. Each individual will have their challenges to overcome each day.
