Supplementary notes: Indigo Revolt The Indigo revolt was a peasant movement and subsequent uprising of indigo farmers against the indigo planters that arose in Chaugacha village of Nadia in Bengal in 1859. The Indigo revolt was restricted to Bengal region only. The revolt mainly protested against the forceful cultivation of indigo, fraudulent contracts and intimidation of peasants by Indigo planters. Digambar Biswas and Bishnu Biswas were the main leaders of the revolt. The ryots protested through rent strike by refusing to pay the enhanced rent. They also learned to use the legal machinery and initiated legal action against the indigo planters. The Bengali intelligentsia played a signi fi cant role by supporting the peasant’s cause through mass meetings, preparing memoranda and supporting their legal battles. The government appointed an Indigo Commission later. It noted the prevalent exploitative practices in Indigo-plantation resulting in the success of the movement.
