Conciliation
In the, field of industrial "ations, conciliation has been more frequently used for settling disputes. According to International Labour Organization, conciliation can be defined as 'the practice by which the services of neutral third party are used in a dispute as a means of helping the disputing parties to reduce the extent of their differences and to arrive at an amicable settlement or agreed solution.' In India, the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, provides for conciliation. It has emerged as a frequently used method of third party intervention to settle industrial disputes. It can be differentiated from adjudication. Adjudication involves,
"Compulsory attendance of witness, compulsory powers of investigation and compulsory enforcement of awards with penalties for breaches of these awards.' Thus, adjudication embraces intervention in the dispute by a third party appointed by the government for the purpose of deciding the nature of final settlement. In another way, one can also say that compulsory arbitration and adjudication are more or less identical.
