Classification in Reasoning

Classification based questions test a student’s ability to identify the common features among the given set of words. In most of the questions, you are required to figure out the word that is least like the other given words. The different types of classification questions are:

Identify the odd word
In this type of classification, words signify some things/objects classified on the basis of common properties and features. You are asked to find the word that doesn’t fit in the group. Look at the following group of words: artificial, man-made, natural, synthetic. As obvious, ‘natural’ is the odd word here.
Identify the odd pair of words
In this type of questions, answer options are given in form of pairs, where the pair of words is related to each other in some way. You are required to identify that pair which doesn’t share that common relation/feature. Look at the following pair of words: Apple : Jam, Lemon : Citrus, Orange : Squash, Tomato : Pury.
In this example, lemon & citrus are not related to each other like the other pairs.
Identify the group of odd letters
In this type of classification, groups of random letters are given which follow a common pattern. You need to identify the group that doesn’t conform to that common pattern. Example: ACE, GIK, BEG, PRT
In this example, ‘BEG’ is the group of odd letters.
Hence, classification questions require you to spot the heterogeneous group among the homogeneous groups. Apart from the above types of classifications, questions may be asked from mixed types.
