    Let Punit's row upstream at x kmph
    Then, his rate downstream = 2x
    Rate in still water = 1/2× (2x+x)kmph = 3x/2 kmph.
    So, 3x/2 = 36  or   x = 24
    Rate upstream = 24kmph, Rate downstream = 48kmph.
    Hence, rate of stream = 1/2×(48 - 24) kmph = 12 kmph
