A cyclist covers his first 20 km at an average speed of 40 kmph, another 10 km at an average speed of 10 kmph and the last 30 km at an average speed of 40 kmph. Then the average speed of the entire journey is
20 kmph
26.67 kmph
28.24 kmph
30 kmph
Let d1, d2 and d3 be 20 km , 10 km and 30 km
and s1,s2 and s3 be 40 km/hr , 10 km/hr and 40 km/hr respectively
Hence t1 = d1 / s1 = 20 /40 = 1/2 hr
t2 = d2/s2 = 10/10 = 1 hr
t3 = d3/s3 = 30/40 = 3/4 hr
total distance = 20+10+30 = 60 km
total time = 1/2 + 1 + 3/4
= 2+4+3 / 4 = 9 /4
Speed = Distance / time
= 60 / (9/4) = 26.67 km/hr
