A passenger train and a goods train are running in the same direction on parallel railway tracks. If the passenger train now takes three times as long to pass the goods train, as when they are running in opposite directions, then what is the ratio of the speed of the passenger train to that of the goods train?
(Assume that the trains nm at uniform speeds)
2 :1
3 : 2
4 :3
1 : 1
Let the length of train A be l1 and the length of train B be l2.
Let their respective speeds be Ua & Ub
Now, according to the question, 3{(l1+l2)/(Ua+Ub)} = (l1 +l2)/Ua-Ub
On solving the above equation, 2Ua = 4Ub Ua/Ub =2/1
