Biosphere Reserves are established for the conservation of biodiversity for economic and social development and maintenance of associated cultural values. There are 18 Biosphere Reserves in the country. Agasthyamala Biosphere reserve is located at the southernmost part of the Western Ghats and spread over two states, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The region is well known for its rich biodiversity. It was made a biosphere reserve in January 1989; while The Great Himalayan is a National Park situated in Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh. The park was established in 1984.
