World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on June 14 to thank people for donating blood voluntarily and also raise awareness about the need to donate more blood. Testing, donation, collection, storage and distribution of blood is essential.The host country for the global event of World Blood Donor Day 2023 is Algeria through its National Blood Transfusion Service.
It helps save the lives of people who meet with accidents, get injured in natural disasters or suffer from diseases like anaemia, leukaemia, kidney disease, etc.
Theme of World Blood Donor Day: The WHO has set this year's theme as "Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often"; One of WHOs statements reads, It focuses on patients requiring life-long transfusion support and underlines the role every single person can play, by giving the valuable gift of blood or plasma.
History: The day was first observed in 2004 by World Health Organization (WHO). Later, in 2005, at the World Health Assembly, it was declared as a global annual event to celebrate blood donors across the world and raise awareness about the importance of donating blood.
