The Naval Ratings mutiny took place in 1946. Basically, it started as the sailors were dissatisfied with the food they were given. This snowballed into a mutiny against British rule. The mutiny started in Bombay Dock. It finally spread to every naval establishment in the country involving upwards of 70 ships and 20,000 sailors. The reason this was significant was, it showed the Britishers that they no longer held control of the Royal Indian Military. The military, after having seen service in WW2, was disillusioned by the way they were treated back home in India! There was also a large amount of support for the Indian National Army(Azad Hind Fauj) and Subhash Chandra Bose. In 1946, after notable commanders of the INA were hanged, there was unrest in the armed forces. This led to various small time mutinies, including one in the air force.
