Rajendra Singh took charge as the Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, the first non-Navy officer to be elevated to the top post. Singh was the Additional Director General of the Indian Coast Guard. His elevation as the DG was approved by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet on 24th February 2016.
This is the first time an officer from within has been promoted as its Chief which was traditionally headed by a three-star Naval officer since it was set up in 1978 as the country’s fourth armed force after the Army, Navy and IAF.
