After the rejection and failure of August offer (1940)by congress came Cripps mission (1942).It was headed by Strafford Cripps.

The reasons for Cripps mission coming to india are:

1.high pressure on Britain to secure indian support in world war 2(pressure from USSR,CHINA,USA)

2.Japanese threat to invade india.

The main proposals that mission gave was:

1.India would be given dominion status after the war.

2.Constituent assembly will be formed solely by indians to frame new Constitution.(provided minorities weee protected and any province not willing to join the union could remain separate.

However the mission failed to satisfy the indian masses and it was named as “a post dated cheque”
