Examine these two statements carefully and select the correct answer using the code given below.
Statement I:
Sound waves can travel through vacuum.
Statement II :
Light is an electromagnetic wave and can travel through vacuum.
Both the statements are individually true and Statement II is the correct explanation of Statement I.
Both the statements are individually true but Statement II is not the correct explanation of Statement I
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Light can travel in vacuum but sound cannot. This’s because sound waves are vibrating waves (also called pressure waves ) travel by physical contact of molecules. Sound can travel in air, metals like steel or aluminium. Light speed is constant. But in case of sound denser the medium faster the speed. For example, sound travels faster in steel than in air. Because, in case of aluminium the molecules carrying sound waves are closely packed in camparison to the air. Speed of sound is about 343m/second in air and 6300m/ second in aluminium. Vaccum has no particles and hence sound cannot travel.
