In which one of the following buildings the first extant true arch is found ?
Arhai din ka Jhonpra
Quwwat ul Islam Mosque
Tomb of Sultan Balban
Alai Darwaza
A true arch or simply an arch is a structure that works on arch action, and consists of voussoirs above the vertical posts and a key stone in the middle (hence it gets curved at the top), due to this arrangement it is able to transfer the loads and arch action is possible. Arches were used to construct large openings without any intermediate support. It was in 13th century that true arch finally came in Indian Architecture and Tomb of Ghiyaz Ud Din Balban in Mehrauli (Delhi) was the first building to use true arches. True arches came to India after almost 2000 years of their invention.
