Maize is cultivated in India for grains or as a cereal crop. In maize, the female flowers produce Corn silk, which is generally regarded as a waste and discarded. However, it possesses cosmetic and medicinal values. Corn silk looks like a mass of threads which trap the pollen for pollination. For medicinal purposes corn silk is harvested just before pollination occurs and can be used in fresh or dried form. A greenish fatty oil (2.0-2.5 %) with an agreeable odour is obtained from the stigmas of maize. Corn silk is a waste material from corn cultivation and available in abundance. It contains proteins, phenolic compounds, particularly flavonoids, vitamins, carbohydrates, calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium salts, volatile oils and steroids such as sitosterol and stigmasterol, alkaloids and saponins. Many flavouring volatile compounds, viz. cis-α-terpinol citronellol, eugenol and neo-iso-3-thujanol are used in perfumery and flavour in soaps, household products and cosmetics.
Corn silk tea inhibits melanin production thus preventing skin pigmentation. Researchers in Korea have reported that corn silk decreased melanin production by about 37%. Corn silk is also a soothing diuretic for almost all problems of the urinary system including improvement in urine flow, inflammation, elimination and formation of kidney stones. Studies on proliferation of human colon cancer cells have revealed that corn silk extract can inhibit proliferation of cancer cells. Aqueous extract of corn silk significantly reduced the symptoms of UTI in addition to reduction in the values of pus cells, RBCs and crystals. In Chinese Traditional Medicine corn silk, known as Yu Mi Xu, has been used as a remedy for thousands of years to relieve internal heat, to manage the digestive system, liver, gall bladder and in the treatment of diabetes, jaundice, gonorrhea, gout and swelling in any body part (edema).
