Earlier books were written out of hand and it would take years to write them. Then in 1450 an invention changed the world. John Gutenberg Inventor of printing press was the son of a merchant and grew up on a large agricultural E state from his childhood he had seen wine and olive presses. Subsequently, he learned the art of polishing stones become master Goldsmith, this knowledge Gutenberg adapted from existing technology to design his innovation. He developed metal types for each of 26 character of the Roman alphabet and devised a way of moving them around so as to compose different words of the text. This came to be known as the movable type printing machine and it remained in the basic printing technology over the next 300 years. The 1st book he printed was 'The Bible', about 180 copies were printed and it took 3 years to produce them And by that time it was too fast. By 1550 printing presses were set up in most countries of Europe. As the number of printing press grew production of books was boomed. This led to the shift from handwriting to printing, which in turn led to the printing revolution. What was printing revolution? It was on just a development, A new way of producing books but it ransformed the lives of people, changed their relationship with information and knowledge and with institutions and authorities. With the printing press a new reading public emerged, Books were now available at the cheaper rate than earlierso that the people can access more and more. But the transition was not so simple books could be read only by the literates and the literacy rate in most countries were very low till 20th century.Gutenberg's invention of the movable type printing press allowed mass communication to become a decisive factor in the European Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation that splintered the powerful Catholic Church during the 16th century. The largely unrestricted spread of information sharply increased literacy throughout Europe.
