History of the day
International Nurses Day was first proposed by Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1953 and was first celebrated in 1965. Since 1974, the International Council of Nurses has promoted this day by producing and distributing educational and public information materials.
