Why In The News?

• The Assam government is carrying out a drive to shift nearly 600 families, displaced by an eviction drive two years ago, from their temporary settlement at Gorukhuti in Darrang district.

=> Garukhuti is in Darrang district under Sipajhar tehsil.

=> In 2021 illegally occupied land was recovered by local administration to start Garukhuti project.

Garukhuti project:

=> It is a 9.6 crore ‘agricultural project’.

=> The project would promote afforestation and agriculture activities, involving indigenous youth.

=> The project create employment opportunities for youth of the region.

=> 134 Ecological Task Forces deployed for massive afforestation activities.

=> 2000 Gir cows have been transported to Garukhuti.

=> Garukhuti is a successful project in attaining its goals.

=> It is expected that Garukhuti will act as model for agricultural revolution in Assam.
