Madan Kamdev temple:
=> About 43 km away from Guwahati.
=> Scattered on Dewangiri hillock.
History:
=> 10th-11th century
=> Believed to have built by Pala dynasty(namely Ratna Pala, Indra Pala and Gopala).
=> The ASI took over the charge of conservation of the temples in 1986.
Mythology:
=> Dedicated to lord Kamdev(God of love)-depict the love story of Kamdev and his wife Rati.
=> Believed that Kama or Madan-God of Love was reborn in Kamrup after being turn into ashes by angry Lord Shiva from where the name originates (Kama- Rupa).
=> One school believes that Madan was reborn and united to his wife Rati in this tiny hillock.
Architecture of the temple:
=> Nagara style architecture.
=> Images carved out of monolithic rock.
=> Erotic images-sculptured in the ornamentation.
=> The ruined garbhagriha (sanctum) houses a large stone idol of Shiva and Parvati in an intimate embrace or 'Alingan' posture.
=> A six headed Bhairaba, four armed Shiva, terrible looking demon, men-women in every conceivable erotic postures, griffins, nymphs, dancing fairies, gods and goddesses in cosmic evolutions, walls, pillars, lintels and door frames decorated with flowers, animals, Kalpa-vriksha (the tree of fulfillment).
