Explanation:

Bodhi tree is a peepal tree located in the Mahabodhi temple complex at Bodh Gaya in Gaya district of Bihar state. It was under this tree that Lord Buddha attained Bodh (enlightenment) in 531 BC. The Bodhi tree was secretly cut down by Tishirakshita, a Vaishya queen of Emperor Ashoka. This was the first attempt to cut down the Bodhi tree. This attempt of the queen proved unsuccessful and the Bodhi tree was not destroyed. After a few years a new tree grew from the root of the Bodhi tree. For the second time, the king of Bengal, Shashank, decided to uproot the Bodhi tree from the root itself. But they failed in this. When its roots did not come out, King Shashank got the Bodhi tree cut down and set its roots on fire. But the roots were not completely destroyed. After a few years, a third generation Bodhi tree emerged from this root. For the third time, the Bodhi tree was destroyed due to natural disaster in the year  1876. At that time Lord Kaningham reestablished it in Bodh Gaya by bringing for a branch of Bodhi tree from Anuradhapuram in Sri Lanka in 1880. This is the fourth Bodhi tree of this generation, which exists till date.
