First "Water Plus" City: Indore

Context:  Indore, the country's cleanest city and Madhya Pradesh's commercial capital  has now been declared the first "water plus" city of India under the Swachh Survekshan 2021.

About ‘Water Plus’ status

  • ‘Water Plus’ status is accorded to cities under the Swachh Survekshan survey.
  • It is given on the basis of their performance in tapping the polluted water and preventing its flow in the rivers and other freshwater bodies of the region.
  • Indore city has become the first city to attain the ‘Water Plus’ status in the Swachh Survekshan 2021.

HOW INDORE ACHIEVED 'WATER PLUS' TAG?

  • Indore identified 7,000 outfalls of greywater that used to drain water into the rivers and other streams and closed by the city administration.
  • Moreover, 30 per cent of the city's sewage water was recycled and reused. This recycled water was used by people in their gardens and some construction sites,"

Note: Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
