Madhya Pradesh is one of the states through which it flows, the others being Maharashtra and Gujarat. The longest portion of the river lies in Madhya Pradesh. The river originate in MP’s Amarkantak Plateau. Over 30 dams have been planned on this river.

The Sardar Sarovar Project is located on the border between Gujarat and MP. This gravity dam is 2nd largest in terms of volume of concrete used and 3rd highest concrete dam in the country. The project has a capacity of 1450MW, of which 57% is used by MP.
