UPSC CSP Previous Year Paper (2020)

    1 only

    Incorrect Answer

    2 and 3 only

    Incorrect Answer

    2 only

    Correct Answer

    1 and 3 only

    Incorrect Answer
    Explanation:
    • Statement 1 is incorrect: Jet Streams occur in both Northern and Southern Hemisphere. The actual appearance of jet streams result from the complex interaction between many variables - such as the location of high and low pressure systems, warm and cold air, and seasonal changes.
    • Statement 2 is correct: The “eye” is a roughly circular area of comparatively light winds and fair weather found at the center of a severe tropical cyclone.  Extra-tropical cyclones may not always have an eye, whereas mostly mature storms have well developed eye. Rapidly intensifying storms may develop an extremely small, clear, and circular eye, sometimes referred to as a pinhole eye.
    • Statement 3 is incorrect: The eye is the region of lowest surface pressure and warmest temperatures aloft (in the upper levels) – the eye temperature may be 10°C warmer or more at an altitude of 12 km than the surrounding environment, but only 0-2°C warmer at the surface in the tropical cyclone. Eyes range in size from 8 km to over 200 km across, but most are approximately 30-60 km in diameter. It is warmer and not colder for a tropical cyclone. The warmer temperature is what drives the storm.

    Hence option 3rd is correct.
