Goa was under Portuguese rule since the sixteenth century and was finally liberated by military intervention in December 1961. The Government of India sent the army, and within two days of action, Goa, Diu, and Daman were liberated and became Union Territory. There was strong support for liberation both within Goa and from socialist satyagrahis from Maharashtra.
