Government declares birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar on April 14 as public holiday from 2021
  • The government has declared Ambedkar Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar which falls on 14 April every year, as a public holiday with effect from 2021, under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
  • On 14 April 2021, India will celebrate the 130th birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
  • Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar was born on April 14 in 1891. He was awarded India’s highest civilian honour the Bharat Ratna in 1990.
  • He is considered a key architect of the constitution of India and became the first law and justice minister of independent India.
  • Babasaheb Ambedkar died on December 6 in 1956.
  • He was a renowned social reformer and a Dalit icon, who spoke against the inequality, injustice and discrimination faced by the members of the dalit community.
