Consider the following statements.
1. In sub-tropical high pressure belts, the air is comparatively moist and humid.
2. The doldrums is a zone of wind convergence.
Which of the above statements is/ are correct?
1 only
2 only
Both 1 and 2
Neither 1 nor 2
Statement 1 is incorrect: In subtropical high pressure belts, the air is comparatively dry. Supplementary notes: Pressure Belts
Circulation of air occurs over the surface of the earth due to the differences in pressure.
Doldrum - Along the equator and within 5 degrees north and south, lies the Equatorial Low Pressure Belt, where there is intense heating with expanding air and ascending convection currents. This equatorial belt is often termed as Doldrums and is a zone of wind convergence.
Horse Latitudes - About 30 degrees north and south occur the sub-tropical high pressure belts. The broad areas of sinking air within the belt of subtropical high-pressure systems take their toll on precipitation, with the associated warming discouraging the development of clouds. As a result, the region of subtropical highs tends to be very dry. This is the region of wind divergence - and anti cyclones.
Around latitudes 60 degrees north to south are two temperate low pressure belts which are also zones of convergence with cyclonic activity. The sub polar low pressure areas are best developed over the oceans, where temperature differences between summer and winter are negligible.
High pressure belts lie at the North and South poles where the temperatures are permanently low.
