Cyclone refers to any spinning storm that rotates around a low-pressure center..The low-pressure center is also referred to as the ‘eye’ of the storm. The areas enveloping the center are called ‘arms’ of the storm. All the action happens in the ‘arms’ area where the storm is throwing out all of its rain and wind.Cyclones are categorised by the maximum wind speed they generate.

Ockhi was described as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’It is the third strongest category according to the definitions used by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Cyclones that form in every ocean basin across the world are named by the regional specialised meteorological centres (RSMCs) and Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres (TCWCs).There are six RSMCs in the world, including the India Meteorological Department (IMD), and five TCWCs.

In 2000, a group of nations called WMO/ESCAP (World Meteorological Organisation/United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific), which comprised Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand, decided to starnaming cyclones in the region.

?The names of cyclones in the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea are decided by eight countries.

    • Each of them lists out eight names which are approved by the weathermen of these countries. So each time the list has 64 names. The countries take turns to name the cyclones.
    • Severe cyclonic storm ONIL was the first tropical cyclone to be named in the North Indian Ocean.
    • The first cyclone named by India was Agni, in 2004, and the last one was Vayu in 2019.

Cyclone "Okhi", which came in November 2017, was named by Bangladesh, which means "eye" in the Bengali language.
