A household of three humans has cats and dogs in the ratio 1 : 2. If the total number of legs in the household is 42, what is the

total number of cats in the household?

- Overall leg count: Human legs (6) + Cat legs (4x) + Dog legs (8x) = 42.

- Simplify the equation: 6 + 12x = 42.

- Reduce: 12x = 36.

- Divide by 12: x = 3.
