In Surat Session (1907), Extremists wanted Rai or Tilak as a presidential candidate and Moderates supported Ghosh to be the President. But Rai stepped down and Ghosh became the President. The British Government immediately attacked the extremists and Extremist newspapers were suppressed.
The Swaraj Party was established as the Congress-Khilafat Swaraj Party. It was a political party formed in India in 1January 1923 after the Gaya annual conference in December 1922 of the National Congress, that sought greater self-government and political freedom for the Indian people from the British Raj.
At its Madras Session in 1927, presided over by Dr. Ansari (not by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad), the Indian National Congress decided to boycott the Simon Commission “at every stage and in every form”. The Muslim league and the Hindu Mahasabha decided to support the Congress decision.
The Indian National Congress, on 19 December 1929, passed the historic 'Purna Swaraj' – (total independence) resolution – at its Lahore session. A public declaration was made on 26 January 1930 – a day which the Congress Party urged Indians to celebrate as 'Independence Day'.
