India has achieved the second position in global fish production, contributing around 8% of the world’s total output.

Fish production in the country has more than doubled over the past decade, driven by aquaculture growth and supportive government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

• India is the second-largest fish producer globally and also ranks second in aquaculture, after China.
• Fish production increased from 95.7 lakh tonnes in 2013–14 to over 184 lakh tonnes in 2023–24, marking 103% growth.
• Inland fisheries contribute over 75% of the country’s total fish output, boosted by culture-based practices in ponds, reservoirs, and tanks.
• The PMMSY has strengthened the sector through infrastructure development, technology adoption, and capacity building.
• Fisheries account for more than 1% of India’s GDP and support the livelihoods of over 28 million people, with India leading in shrimp production and seafood exports.
