With reference to the official languages, which of the amendment did not add a new language/s to the eighth schedule?
21st amendment Act, 1967
42nd amendment Act, 1976
71st amendment Act, 1992
92nd amendment Act, 2003
The Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India lists the official languages of India. Although there are hundreds of languages spoken across the country, the eighth schedule recognizes a total of 22 languages as the official languages. While 14 of these languages were included in the Constitution at first, the rest of the languages were added to the Constitution through subsequent amendments. • Sindhi was added by the 21st Amendment Act of 1967; Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were added by the 71st Amendment Act of 1992; and Bodo, Dongri, Maithili, and Santhali were added by the 92nd Amendment Act of 2003. 42nd Amendment did not add any new official language. Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.
