With regard to Orogeny and Epeirogeny, consider the following statements:
1. Orogenic forces cause depressions or upheavals of land with long wavelengths and broad ripples.
2. Orogeny is mountain building process whereas epeirogeny is a continental building process.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
1 only
2 only
Both 1 and 2
Neither 1 nor 2
Correct Option: (b) Explanation: Statement 1 is incorrect: Epirogenic forces cause depressions or upheavals of land with long wavelengths and broad ripples. Orogenic forces cause deformation of the Earth’s lithosphere and result in the occurrence of several geological processes. Supplementary notes: Orogeny and Epeirogeny All processes that move, elevate or build up portions of the earth’s crust come under diastrophism. In the process of orogeny, the crust is severely deformed into folds. Due to epeirogeny, there may be simple deformation of the crust. It involves upliftment or warping of large parts of the earth’s crust. Orogeny is a mountain building process whereas epeirogeny is continental building process . Orogenic forces cause deformation of the Earth’s lithosphere and result in the occurrence of several geological processes. This process is called orogeny and can take place over a period of several million years. As a result, mountains get formed from the seabed or plains. Epirogenic forces cause depressions or upheavals of land with long wavelengths and broad ripples. This process is called epirogeny, and the result can be either transient i.e. very short or permanent. Differences Orogeny is a mountain building process while epeirogeny is a continent building process. In orogeny crust is severely deformed into folds while in epeirogeny there may be simple deformation. In orogeny the rock masses move in tangential direction to the earth’s surface while in epeirogeny the rock masses move in radial or vertical direction to the earth’s surface.
