The Mahratta was a weekly English newspaper started by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak alongside Vishnushastri Chiplunkar, M.B. Namjoshi, Vamanrao Apte and Gopal Ganesh Agarkar from Mumbai (erstwhile Bombay) in Maharashtra. First published on 2nd of January, 1881 it came along with its brother organ the Kesari, another Marathi newspaper by Tilak. Newspapers like Mahratta were set in the background of the Extremist movement of the nationalist struggle for independece.
The Mahratta newspaper along with its Marathi counterpart were aimed at stirring the national conscience of the people and succeeded in their motive of awakening the people to the real evils of the British rule.
