Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the Bengaluru City University will be renamed Dr Manmohan Singh, in his budget speech in the state Assembly on Thursday ( 6 March 2025).

• This will be the first university in the country to bear Singh’s name, who passed away on December 26, 2024.
• The announcement regarding the state-run Bengaluru City University (BCU), formerly known as Bengaluru Central University, came as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presented his record 16th budget in the Legislative Assembly on March 7, 2025.
• The university, which was established in 2017 and renamed in 2020, is now set for another rechristening under the Congress-led government.
