National Safe Motherhood Day is a yearly event that takes place on April 11 in India. The White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI) initiated this day to raise awareness of the significance of maternal health and reduce maternal mortality rates in the country.

• The Indian government officially recognised this day in 2003 to emphasise the importance of ensuring that women have access to adequate care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period.
• This day also raises awareness for the prevention of child marriages because we can say that child marriage may be an indirect cause of maternal deaths.
• It is the right of every woman to take good quality nutrition and proper healthcare services during and after pregnancy and childbirth.
