India Successfully Tests Indigenous Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM)

On May 5, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully conducted combat firing (with reduced explosives) of the indigenously developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM). This advanced underwater naval mine is designed to bolster India's undersea warfare capabilities, particularly against modern stealth ships and submarines.

Key Highlights:

  • Advanced Detection Capabilities: MIGM is equipped with multiple sensors capable of detecting various signatures such as acoustic, magnetic, pressure, and electric fields generated by marine vessels.
  • Indigenous Development: The mine was developed by DRDO's Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories including the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) in Pune and the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh.
  • Production Partnerships: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Visakhapatnam, and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad, are the production partners for MIGM, ensuring indigenous manufacturing and integration.
  • Operational Flexibility: MIGM can be deployed from various platforms, including ships, submarines, and coastal operation platforms, enhancing its versatility in different maritime scenarios.
  • Strategic Significance: The successful validation trial of MIGM signifies a significant advancement in India's naval defense capabilities, providing a tactical edge in undersea warfare and contributing to national security.

The induction of MIGM into the Indian Navy's arsenal marks a pivotal step in strengthening the country's maritime defense infrastructure, reflecting a commitment to self-reliance and technological advancement in defense systems.
