India’s Coal Production Rises 3.63% in April 2025, Driven by Captive Mining Surge
India's coal production witnessed a steady growth of 3.63% in April 2025, reaching 81.57 million tonnes (MT), up from 78.71 MT in April 2024, according to data released by the Ministry of Coal.
Key Highlights:
- Captive and Commercial Mining Growth: Production from captive and other non-Coal India Ltd (CIL) mines surged by 26.6%, producing 14.51 MT in April 2025 compared to 11.46 MT in the same period last year.
- Coal Dispatch Increase: Total coal dispatches rose to 86.64 MT in April 2025, up from 85.11 MT in April 2024, indicating a consistent supply to meet industrial and power sector demands.
- Stockpile Expansion: As of April 30, 2025, coal companies held a combined stock of 125.76 MT, a significant increase from 102.41 MT the previous year. Notably, CIL's stock alone grew by 22.1%, reaching 105 MT.
- New Coal Blocks Operational: The commencement of operations in newly developed coal blocks, such as the Kotre Basantpur Pachmo block by Central Coalfields Limited and the Naini coal block by Singareni Collieries Company Limited, contributed to the production boost.
- Strategic Focus: The Ministry of Coal emphasized its commitment to enhancing domestic coal production to reduce import dependency and support the nation's energy security.
