The Nagaland government has upgraded Meluri sub-division under Phek district to a full-fledged district with immediate effect, making it the 17th district of the northeastern state. 

The Home department informed that Nagaland Governor La Ganesan has approved the creation of Meluri district with the jurisdiction comprising of the existing Meluri sub-division under Phek district.

The state cabinet on October 30 approved bifurcation of Phek district to make Meluri sub-division a new district for the Pochury community.

Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting, Power and Parliamentary Affairs minister and state government spokesperson KG Kenye said that the decision reflected the state government’s commitment to equitable development across all regions of Nagaland.
