The Meitei language has been recognised (under the name Manipuri) by the Indian Union and was included in the list of scheduled languages (included in the 8th schedule by the 71st amendment of the constitution in 1992).

Under Article 371C of the Constitution of India a special provision with respect to the State of Manipur was made providing for:

constitution and functions of a committee of the Legislative Assembly of the State consisting of members of that Assembly elected from the Hill Areas of that State,
for the modifications to be made in the rules of business of the Government and
modifications in the rules of procedure of the Legislative Assembly of the State and
for any special responsibility of the Governor in order to secure the proper functioning of such a committee.
Article 371C was not a part of the Constitution of India 1950. It was inserted by the Constitution (Twenty-seventh Amendment) Act, 1971.
