Ghazal It is a poetic form that consists of rhyming couplets and a refrain, with each line sharing the same meter. A Ghazal may be understood as a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain. It is said to have originated in Iran in the 10th century AD. A Ghazal never exceeds the 12 ashaar or couplets. Hence Statement 1 is incorrect. The Ghazal spread in South Asia in the 12th century due to the influence of Sufi mystics and the courts of the new Islamic Sultanate, but it reached its zenith in the Mughal period. Hence Statement 2 is correct.
