The Government of India has introduced the e-Zero FIR initiative, a digital mechanism designed to streamline the registration of high-value cyber financial fraud cases. Launched as a pilot project in Delhi, this system automatically converts eligible cybercrime complaints into First Information Reports (FIRs), aiming to enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of law enforcement agencies in tackling cybercrime.
Key Points:
Automated FIR Registration: The e-Zero FIR system automatically registers FIRs for cyber financial frauds exceeding Rs. 10 lakh, reported through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) or helpline 1930. This automation eliminates the need for victims to visit police stations, facilitating quicker legal action.
Pilot Project in Delhi: Initially launched in Delhi, the initiative is part of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre's (I4C) efforts under the Ministry of Home Affairs to combat cybercrime effectively. Plans are underway to expand this system nationwide.
Legal Framework: The e-Zero FIR mechanism operates under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, which allows for the registration of FIRs irrespective of territorial jurisdiction, thereby expediting the investigative process.
Enhanced Cybersecurity Measures: This initiative aligns with the government's broader vision of a 'Cyber Secure Bharat,' aiming to bolster the national cybersecurity infrastructure and ensure swift justice for victims of cyber financial crimes.
Future Expansion: Following the pilot phase, the government intends to roll out the e-Zero FIR system across all states and union territories, enhancing the country's capacity to address and mitigate cyber threats effectively.
The e-Zero FIR initiative represents a significant step towards modernizing India's approach to cybercrime, ensuring timely registration of cases, and reinforcing the nation's commitment to cybersecurity.
