India has officially introduced biometric e-passports, aligning with over 120 countries in adopting advanced travel documentation. These e-passports, embedded with RFID chips, enhance security and streamline international travel processes. Manufactured domestically, the nationwide rollout is scheduled for mid-2025.

Key Points:

• The biometric e-passports feature an embedded RFID chip containing the holder's demographic and biometric data, including facial recognition and fingerprints, ensuring enhanced security and compliance with ICAO international standards. 
• Manufacturing of these e-passports is conducted at the India Security Press in Nashik, supporting the "Make in India" initiative and ensuring national control over the production process. 
• The application process for e-passports remains consistent with the traditional method, allowing citizens to apply online via the Passport Seva Portal and schedule appointments at Passport Seva Kendras for biometric data collection. 
• The initial rollout of e-passports has commenced in 13 cities, including Goa, Ranchi, and Delhi, with plans for nationwide distribution by mid-2025. 
• These e-passports are designed to facilitate faster immigration clearance at international airports, reduce identity fraud, and provide greater international recognition for Indian travelers.
